Alton Towers - Visit PortAventura in Salou, Spain rather than stay in the UK

Theme parks are always a great day out for the family for both kids and the big kids! Wherever you’re an adrenaline junkie or prefer to tackle the water rapids there is always something to do for fun filled days out.

Being one of Europe’s biggest theme parks PortAventura hosts some really spectacular rides and has some top quality shows and entertainment that can match any park in the UK. One great thing about visiting a theme park in Spain is of course the guaranteed sunshine and in comparison PortAventura has just as many if not more choice and variety of rides and activities.

Similarly to Alton Towers, PortAventura also has a water park which is located a short distance from the park and is completely outdoors. The water park entry is included with your park tickets so there is no need to splash out (excuse the pun) on extra tickets. The Alton Towers Water Park is treated as a separate part of the park and so there is an additional charge. Personally we would much rather spend time at the PortAventura Water Park and splash round in the sun than risk going to the Alton Towers Water Park which is part outdoor and part indoor (due to of course the indecisiveness of the British weather).

PortAventura has its own themed hotels, which in some ways resemble the Alton Towers hotels yet differ in terms of variety and standards. Whereas Alton Towers only has 2 hotels, at PortAventura you have a choice of 4 hotels all 4* and all with different and exotic themes with a choice of board basis. If you really want to wow the kids you can stay in the Club Woody and Friends rooms located in the Hotel PortAventura. The rooms are all themed with Woody Pecker and friends and also comes with your own personalised welcome and an express pass to the park (basically you get to jump all the queues!). Whilst staying at the hotel you’ll bump into the PortAventura characters such as Woody Woodpecker and Betty Boop, great for the young ones who can interact and play.

You’ll find the prices at PortAventura very reasonable and unlike the Alton Towers prices your hotel accommodation includes free park tickets and Water Park tickets, which you would have to buy separately from Alton Towers. There is also a current offer at the moment with 50% off all hotels, some of which include free kids places depending on where you are staying.

One of the key benefits of booking a PortAventura family break instead of just heading to Alton Towers for me is the fact that for pretty much the same cost you can go and enjoy a theme park in Spain. Theme Parks in the rain are certainly not the best way to make most of the day and in Spain the weather is much more reliable. With PortAventura you can choose if you want a bed and breakfast stay, half board or all inclusive and each hotel has its own large swimming pool which is great if you’re looking to relax by the pool after a day at the park. To ease the cost PortAventura also offer £1 deposits on all hotels stays, meaning that you can book your accommodation and then pay off the rest at a later date.
